Scandi Skies: Modern Scandinavian Second-Storey Addition

Scandi Skies is a Scandinavian second-storey addition in East York, Toronto, designed and built by Cedarstone Group Inc. A modest bungalow became a bright two-storey home with more living space, a cohesive modern exterior and a custom open-riser oak staircase.

The new upper floor includes two spacious bedrooms with 15-foot vaulted ceilings and a modern bathroom. A light-filled workspace shows the flexibility of the added rooms, while sliding glass doors connect the primary bedroom to an upper wood deck with black-framed glass railings. Warm wood, white walls and clean black accents carry the Scandinavian design throughout.

Architectural details include oak stair treads and handrails, slim black balusters, custom winder steps, natural wood exterior siding and dark vertical metal cladding. The new bathroom features marble-effect porcelain tile, a glass-enclosed tub-shower, matte-black fixtures, a recessed shower niche, a skylight and a floating wood double vanity.

The addition required structural reinforcement of the existing foundation and load-bearing walls, custom framing for the vaulted ceilings, enhanced insulation and energy-efficient building-envelope upgrades. The vertical expansion added an entire upper level while preserving the home’s footprint.
